The Windmill Nurseries were founded in 1990 by Mrs Jan Driver, a qualified teacher (BPhil.Ed.) Jan had spent many years teaching children with additional needs and felt that, if only a good pre-school foundation could be offered to children, they would be better prepared for more formal learning. Jan has also trained and practiced as an early years Ofsted inspector and NVQ assessor and most recently as an EYP (Early Years Professional). Jan founded her first nursery in Portreath in a former shop in January 1990. The Windmill Nursery – Redruth opened in May 1997. In May 2000, Jan opened a play club for older children, as parents were finding it difficult to access good quality child care for their children when they became too old to attend the nursery.
After 20 years of care and education, the original nursery in Portreath closed. Jan felt the building was not accessible for all children and their parents and children could not access the garden easily because there were stairs to climb. She decided to concentrate on making Windmill Nursery, Redruth a top quality, fully accessible nursery with modern facilities. Jan has a team of quality staff led by competent and experienced managers. Jan also worked for fifteen years as part-time for the Cornwall Council as an early years senior special educational needs co-ordinator before retiring in November 2017
